Japan's steel exports fell 1.1% year-on-year in September 2024

According to data from the Japan Iron and Steel Federation, Japan exported 2.627 million tons of steel in September 2024, down 1.1% year-on-year, due to a decline in exports to most major markets except ASEAN and the United States, with the largest decline in exports to the European Union. Among them, the export volume of ordinary steel was 1.814 million tons, a slight decrease of 0.2% year-on-year. In terms of major product exports, Japan's exports of hot-rolled wide strips in September were 951,000 tons, up 1.0% year-on-year; exports of thick plates were 244,000 tons, down 10.1% year-on-year; exports of galvanized steel plates were 169,000 tons, up 3.4% year-on-year, the first year-on-year increase in 12 months; exports of cold-rolled wide strips were 142,000 tons, up 24.7% year-on-year.
In terms of export destinations, Thailand was Japan's largest steel exporter in September, with an export volume of 443,000 tons, up 25.9% year-on-year, the first year-on-year increase in 11 months; secondly, 337,000 tons of steel were exported to South Korea, down 19.6% year-on-year, and the 12th consecutive month of year-on-year decline; 180,000 tons were exported to China, down 21.8% year-on-year, and the third consecutive month of year-on-year decline; 148,000 tons were exported to Taiwan, China, up 6.1% year-on-year; and 147,000 tons were exported to the United States, up 12.9% year-on-year.
In terms of imports, Japan imported 669,000 tons of steel in September 2024, up 0.7% year-on-year. Among them, 434,000 tons of ordinary steel were imported, up 9.4% year-on-year. In terms of product types, Japan imported 136,000 tons of hot-rolled wide steel in September, up 21.2% year-on-year; 78,000 tons of cold-rolled wide steel, up 15.7% year-on-year; 111,000 tons of galvanized steel plates, up 5.5% year-on-year; 41,000 tons of thick plates, down 2.4% year-on-year, the first year-on-year decline in eight months.
Looking at the sources of Japan's ordinary steel imports in September, 274,000 tons came from South Korea, a year-on-year increase of 10.3%; 86,000 tons came from China, a year-on-year increase of 4.8%; and 71,000 tons came from Taiwan, China, a year-on-year increase of 19.2%.
