The Ultimate Guide to Steel Strip
Steel Strip is a narrow, thin sheet of steel supplied in coil or cut-to-length form, widely used in manufacturing, construction, and industrial applications. It is typically produced by cold rolling or hot rolling, offering precise thickness, smooth surface finish, and excellent mechanical properties. Depending on the grade, steel strip can be low carbon for easy forming, medium/high carbon for strength and wear resistance, or stainless steel for superior corrosion protection. Common uses include automotive parts, saw blades, springs, packaging straps, building components, and appliance manufacturing. Steel strips are also available with protective coatings such as galvanized (GI), galvalume (GL), or color-coated finishes to extend service life in harsh environments.
What is Steel Strip?
Steel strip (also known as narrow strip steel) is a narrow steel coil produced by hot or cold rolling and then slitting. Common thicknesses range from 0.10–3.00 mm, and widths from 10–600 mm (custom widths are available).
Common classification (by material/surface/state)
(1) By material
Low carbon steel strip: SPCC, DC01, A1008, SAE1006/1008, Q195/Q235 - good formability, excellent weldability and wide application.

Alloy/spring steel strip: 65Mn, 60Si2Mn, 51CrV4, etc. - high elasticity and high fatigue life.
Stainless steel strip: 201, 304, 316L, 430 - corrosion resistant, common surfaces BA/2B/No.4.
Coated steel strip:
Galvanized (GI/GA): ASTM A653 / EN 10346
Aluminum zinc (GL/Galvalume®): ASTM A792 / EN 10346
Aluminum coating: ASTM A463
Color coating (PPGI/PPGL): coating on the coating
Tinplate: ASTM A623 / EN 10202 (for food packaging, classified as a specialty)
(2) By surface/finish
Cold rolled bright surface, matte surface (Matte)
Stainless steel: BA (bright annealed), 2B, No.4 (hairline), HL, etc.
Coating: Common zinc layer/aluminum zinc layer weight can be customized according to demand
(3) According to hardness/state
Soft (annealed), semi-hard, full hard (Skin-pass/Temper Rolled adjustment)
Delivery status can be customized according to strength/hardness/elongation targets to meet deep drawing, bending or elasticity requirements
(4)Press the edge
Slit Edge, Deburred/Rounded Edge, Sheared/Polished Edge
Production process
Hot Rolled Coil (HRC) → Pickling → Cold Rolled (CR) → Annealing & Skin-pass → Slitting → Deburring/Trimming → Packing and Shipping

Specification range and tolerance (normal, customizable)
Thickness: 0.10–3.00 mm (thicker is negotiable)
Width: 10–600 mm (typical ±0.10–0.20 mm)
Thickness tolerance: Depends on thickness range and standard (cold rolled thin material can be more stringent)
Roll inner diameter (ID): 508 mm (20") or 610 mm (24")
Roll weight: 2-10 tons/roll (smaller rolls can be customized based on equipment limitations or manual handling requirements)
Surface protection: Anti-rust oil (Oiled) or dry (Dry); Paper cover + iron cover + moisture-proof film export packaging
Typical application scenarios
Construction/Hardware: Rolling shutter door materials, metal profiles, bridge accessories, pendants, sheet metal parts
Manufacturing/machining: stamping parts, bending parts, gaskets, clamps, pipe strips, pipe cores
Fasteners/metal products: nail wire, wire rope, blades, saw blades, springs
Home appliances/furniture: decorative strips, back panels, support strips, edge banding metal strips
Packaging/Bundling: Steel strapping (special strapping steel is required)
Automotive/Transportation: Clamps, bellows straps, thermal insulation panels (alum-zinc/aluminum/stainless)
Agriculture and animal husbandry/enclosure: fence, mesh raw materials (need to be further drawn/punched)
Selection Guide (Application → Recommendation)
Deep drawing/bending parts: DC01/SPCC soft state; DC03/DC04 is optional for parts requiring higher forming performance
General stamping/folding: SPCC/DC01 semi-hard; thickness 0.5–1.5 mm commonly used
Elastic/wear-resistant parts: C67S/C75S, 65Mn, 51CrV4 (used after heat treatment)
Corrosion resistance/food contact: 304/316L (2B/BA/No.4 according to appearance requirements)
Cost-effective anti-corrosion: GI (galvanized) / GL (aluminum zinc), anti-corrosion life is determined by gram weight
High temperature/exhaust/heat insulation: aluminum (A463) or stainless steel 409/430/304
Safety/manual assembly: deburring/rounding of edges is recommended to reduce the risk of scratches
FAQ
Q1: How narrow can the steel strip be?
A: Conventionally, 10 mm is possible; narrower widths require evaluation of the slitting tool and winding stability.
Q2: Can the edges be rounded/chamfered?
A: Yes, we provide deburring/edge rounding services, which are suitable for manual assembly and high safety requirements.
Q3: Can you supply in small rolls?
A: We can make 500-1500 kg/roll as required, which is convenient for small wire bodies or manual handling.
Q4: Can I specify the hardness/strength?
A: The annealing and shaping process can be adjusted according to the target hardness/yield/elongation.
Q5: Should I choose GI, GL or stainless?
A: Based on the corrosion environment/cost/appearance: GI/GL is selected for general outdoor use; stainless steel is selected for high corrosion or sanitary environments.
