Welded Steel Pipe is manufactured by forming steel strips or plates into a round or square shape and joining the edges through welding. Welded Steel Pipe Types
Welded Steel Pipe Types mainly include three categories: ERW (Electric Resistance Welded), LSAW (Longitudinal Submerged Arc Welded), and SSAW (Spiral Submerged Arc Welded) pipes. ERW pipes are produced by resistance welding and are widely used for general structural and mechanical applications. LSAW pipes are manufactured with a straight longitudinal weld, offering high strength and precise dimensions for high-pressure and large-diameter projects. SSAW pipes are formed with a spiral weld, providing flexible diameters and good load-bearing capacity, making them suitable for long-distance pipelines and infrastructure works.
Classification of Welded Steel Pipe
According to Weld Seam Form
Welded steel pipes are classified into straight seam welded pipes and spiral welded pipes based on the form of the weld.
Straight seam welded pipes feature a simple production process, high manufacturing efficiency, low cost, and rapid industrial development.
Spiral welded pipes generally offer higher overall strength than straight seam welded pipes. They allow the use of narrower steel strips to produce pipes with larger diameters, and the same strip width can be used to manufacture pipes of different diameters. However, compared with straight seam pipes of the same length, spiral welded pipes have a weld seam that is 30–100% longer, resulting in relatively lower production speed. Therefore, straight seam welding is mainly used for small-diameter pipes, while spiral welding is preferred for large-diameter pipes.
Classification by Welding Method
According to the welding process, welded steel pipes can be divided into:
Arc welded pipes
Resistance welded pipes (high-frequency and low-frequency)
Gas welded pipes
Furnace welded pipes
Submerged arc welded (SAW) pipes
Downward welded pipes
Classification by Pipe End Shape
Based on shape, welded steel pipes include round welded pipes and special-shaped welded pipes, such as square, rectangular, triangular, and diamond sections.
Classification by Material and Purpose
When classified by material and application, welded steel pipes include:
Welded pipes for mining and fluid transportation
Galvanized welded pipes for low-pressure fluid transportation
Electric welded pipes for belt conveyor rollers
Low-pressure fluid transportation welded steel pipes, commonly known as black pipes, are used to convey water, gas, air, oil, heating steam, and other low-pressure fluids. In addition to direct fluid transport, they are also widely used as base pipes for galvanized welded pipes.
